If you look at the jewish religion
well I will tell you two basic differences. 1) Ours has withstood the test of time and space. There is no other religion that has withstood such a long time in so many different places and is still the same today - truth is not subject to a time or a place - and as such Judaims proves to be true
Judaism is the only religion that didn't start with a single individual who claimed he had a revelation... all the Jewish people - some three million - witnessed the beginning of the religion at the revelation of sinai
2) Judaism is the only religion that didn't start with a single individual who claimed he had a revelation then attracted a following. In Judaism all the Jewish people - some three million - witnessed the beginning of the religon at the revelation of sinai

Religion has developed over time. About 5,000 years ago with the advent of writing, so initiated history . This hapenned in Sumer in Uruk the earliest human habitation to desrve the name city in anchient Mesopotamia , The in vention of agricultral made possible the first settled communities. The domestication of animals led to predictable yields of eggs, milk, and a dependant grain supply. The growth in populations in Egypt and Mesopotamia they erected temples . The beginning of civilazation and the appearence of temples are simultaneous in history. The city rose around the alter of the seed-time blood sacrifice. Anchient religions were based upon worshiping a god . This connected the temple to a considerable number of priests and general temple sevants who wore special costuming .They belonged to a knew household . A class and caste apart attracting intelligent recruits from the general population. The priests duty was to perform all sacrifices and related duties. The Old Testament is the evolving of a diffrent idea among the Baal worshipers and sun gods . The worship of the early Hebrews was sacrifice and the devolpment of the idea of monotheism 5000 years before Jesus was born. The Christian church was a part of Judaism that split because it was no longer required to be circumcised or follow the many dietery laws. There is also Buddisihm with an entirely diffrent philosophy that deals with life being suffering and one must try to reach nirvana

Yes you are right, we must make our own mistakes and hopefully learn by them. The bible is not about hate, its all about showing love, being kindly and not hurtful, spiteful or jealous, or greedy!!!
It does promise that there is a better life after death.
I think, that were here to grow and gain soulful, spiritual awareness, whatever we have gained here on earth, we go onto another realm, maybe even reborn, eventually you will achieve and go to the realm of divinity, where you are pure in heart and soul.
Have you ever met, someone who just knows everything, is so wise? that's what you call an old soul, been around for so many years. Then you could meet someone who just tumbles around and they really have no idea on how the get through a day, thats what you call a new soul, has so much to learn and appreciate.
When you become, totally selfless, respect everyone and all of nature around you, its only then that you will be rewarded.
If you want to, you could try to listen to Premier christian radio station, they have people on live who tells of their own personal testimonies and what God does for them in their lives.

I think God's plan and our plans haven't meshed well, especially when it comes to organized religion. God wants us to be not only His children, but He has said He will have a family chosen out of every nation and tongue. Organized religion has been more devisive than unifying...especially when organized religion gets hijacked by various political and economic interests. God has made things pretty clear in His written word, but the fallen nature of human-kind mucks it all up :( He even provides the solution to our problem of the sinful nature, but many refuse that offer because it seems to good to be true. Jesus came into the world not to condem it, but to save it...and no one comes to the Father except through Him. The first thing for you to consider is that we are eternal beings. Intuitively people have realized this since the dawn of time. God has revealed Himself in His creation so that all will be without excuse. It is just that we will all spend eternity differently depending on whether we will believe the word of a God who can not lie and who is truthful and just in all He says and does. I can tell you I shared some of the thoughts you mention here...and turned away from God. Thankfully He rescued me from my folly and I can not tell you how grateful I am for the grace and mercy He has lavished on me. I pray you will find it too.

I can see what you're getting at, but I tend to take a different stance on it. Religion, ANY kind, is just a way of life for most people - a purpose, an end. As humans we all like to see something past the black void of death, so enter religion.
But besides that, we also like to believe in higher beings, in a guiding hand, in a loving parent waiting for us to return once we've completed our life journey. It tends to make us feel warm and helps us push on with life. Parental approval, if you will.
But some people do take it too far and just like to blame their actions and their shortcomings on a Higher Being which is, essentially, exactly what the Bible and other scriptures are trying to deflect. You control your own life (for the most part) and it's not God's fault if you fail at something. <3

I like your question and comments. What if the interpretation of religion that you see all around you is simply false? Religion is used by the impure for their own means. They twist it so that a sane person cannot recognize in it the intention of the Creator is to move people toward ever greater spirituality. Spirituality consists in the embrace of the virtues. Obviously humanity in that embrace would be one people the planet over and at peace with justice for all.

I don't quite see what you're asking here, but I agree that reaching out for religion is an inevitable consequence of having many confused humans living together in varying degrees of 'ignorance' about what constitutes the stuff of life... wo that sounds portentous!

Christianity is a way of denying the fact that death is both inevitable and permanent. When you die you are dead forever, and ever and ever. There is no heaven, no hell, good or bad all people end up the same in the end. Some people refuse to accept this fact, which is unhealthy and quite frankly, a little cowardly. Not to mention thick.

Susan, you read my mind. You have near the same views as me. I think humans like looking at a higher authority and they do that by religion. Although I think religion is not particuraly harmful I have not seen any evidence to point me in any way. If a higher form of life came and showed himself to me I might worship him, but even if he or she came, why would I worship him?

Actual miracles, supernatural events with no scientific explanation, how do atheists explain them?
Also, how can you look at how INTRICATE the world is on a scientific level and believe it was "chance" that brought all that about?
And, if you put some THOUGHT into the Commandments in the Bible, you might think they are there, not for God's sake, but for our own sake, so we don't hurt ourselves and others.
God is a more reasonable explanation than atheism, to me.
