He is absolutely terrified of the neighbor up the street, and he started hiding in the closet while crying. He also wets his bed even more than he used to and has night terrors.

I think you should ask your brother everything that has happened and tell him that everything will be ok. Tell your parents or a trust worthy adult that someone needs to investigate the neighbor. YOur brother should tell you the truth because he probably wouldn't make up a story like this. I have a friend who has gone through the same thing and she was molested by her 18 year old stepbrother and the situation was serious!!!! You need to do something right away!

1. Talk to your brother. Hopefully you have a good enough relationship that he'll talk to you about whatever has happened. Don't go to him accusing the neighbor, sit down and ask him if someone has been hurting him or touching him in a way that makes him feel bad.

2. If he does talk to you, listen completely without interrupting, comfort him, then tell him to sit or lie down in his room for a bit and try to relax (telling you might be emotionally upsetting and wear him out) while you go to your parents for help with this.

3. Talk to your parents privately. Tell them what you've observed, and what your brother told you. Expect that your mom especially will be upset.

4. Nobody should say anything to blame your brother for whatever has happened. Also, even if he has a history of a LOT of lying, NOBODY should accuse him. Rather just ask questions like "this happened for real?" or "you wouldn't make this up, right (name)?" Accusing him of lying will just stop him from telling you the truth because he won't trust you to protect him.

5. Next, someone needs to tell someone in authority. Your parents need to call the police, and social workers will want to talk to your brother to find out what happened so they can stop this person from hurting other kids.

6. If your parents do nothing, when you go to school, you need to go talk to the school counselor right away. Tell them what you've observed, what your brother said, and how your parents have responded.

7. Other than talking to counselors and the authorities, keep this private. It should only be discussed within your family, because telling other people will be very upsetting and embarrassing for your brother. When he's old enough, he can decide if he wants to talk to anyone else about it.

Ask him what is going on and ask him about the neighbor....do not suggest things when you ask him but say things like...

So what do you do with (insert neighbor's name)?

Does he touch you when you play together?

if you get any thought that your brother has been molested call the cops immediately in fact if you have the money take him to a therapist now and explain your worries

Contact someone else to do the asking...Kids usually talk to someone other than their families about that kind of thing. Try an abuse hotline or Family Services or even the police. There should be no reason a child should be that scared.

you should spend a lot of time with him and gain his trust, then ask him why he is so scared of the neighbor, perhaps he will tell you, you can try to coax it out of him if he wont tell you immediatly, this is a really tough question to answer though because it is such a touchy subject. good luck, im sorry i couldnt be of more assistance

Ask him. Also call the cops and don't just ignore it if he says yes.
