I lived in Thailand just before moving to China 4 years ago, and one of the reasons it's so hard to save money there is that you can find a lot of great bargains and cool things to buy!

Computer / consumer electronics -- a couple of earlier posts are correct - but maybe not complete. Yes, Panthip Plaza is probably the best place to buy these sorts of things, and you do have to be careful about buying crap - or paying more for that Sony camcorder than you'd pay at Best Buy. But having said that, you'll probably see a lot of Chinese brands you can't buy back at home - or name-brand models with fewer features that wouldn't sell back at home. In my opinion, here's where the bargain opportunities are. Mercedes Benz doesn't sell it's cheapest cars in Europe or the US, because it wants to keep the upscale market strong there -- but you'll see a lot of cheaper Mercedes models rolling through the streets of Bangkok. Electronic goods manufacturers are the same. So that $500 dollar camera you saw at home might be the same $500 at Panthip - and have a Thai users manual (bummer) - but you might find a cool $300 camera that was never available back at home. (Head around the corner from the WTC, north, then west to find Panthip)

Clothes - honestly, they are cheap by our standards almost everywhere in the city. Yes, Prathunam, around the Indra Hotel is probably one of the cheapest places -- if you want to buy in the dozens, otherwise, Chatuchak might be a better place to go.

But really, I've never bought anything at any of these places - and Khao San Rd., Patpong, Thieves Market, Klong Toei - or any of these other 'bargain' places that was really worth carting back home. Ok, cool dragon shirt to wear on your vacation, but turns into rags after the 2nd wash -- and begins to look like the 2 dollars you paid for it back at home anyway.

But going to the Thai upscale shopping centers - like Central Departments stores, MBK (not the international ones like Gaysorn) - you can find a lot of high-quality merchandise pretty cheap. Last vacation there, I found lots of French and Italian label dress shirts in the 400 baht range (a bit over 10 US) - and still wearing them. Better shirts for cheaper than what I pay for cheap knock offs here in Beijing. Other clothing items are similar.

If you really want to shop til you drop, the expert is Nancy Chandler -- she's made a shopping map for Bangkok that points out pretty much the best place for everything. You can buy them at the airport or hotels, or pay more online here - http://www.nancychandler.net/product.asp?pId=11

Happy shopping!

Hi, there are much things that you can buy as they are cheap, with your superior exchange rate. For computer stuff, I will say that you probably get them cheaper in US rather than in Bangkok. Probably only accessories that are made locally will be cheap, like media cards.

As for clothes, the wholesale center is in Pratunam and you can find many stores selling at very low prices, even more if you buy in numbers. Take a walk around the shops in the vicinity. These may carry better quality and even branded items too.

Other than that, cheap consumer electronics will be those that are made in China. These will be cheap, anything else, better get them elsewhere.

For Electronics: Panthip Plaza (has quality stuff!) in Bangkok. Plenty of selection here. Many shops. Watch out for the guys who try to sell you Porn!...LOL

For clothes: Go to markets. There are also many malls such as MBK or even store chains like Tesco or Big C (in Bangkok). As far as brands go, you will find name brands (genuine) in the malls only but they are pricey and can be more expensive than back home (USA).

If you want brand things - buy them at home - that will be much cheaper - for electronics go to Tokyo,Japan for cheap purchase.
anything cheap here is a bad copy or just some Thai-made junk.

i think of the a number of human beings offered the products in bulk from a producer web site or something of the style and that they get them greater much less costly for paying for that way. they're waiting to get the item at value. basically like the shops. They get it at value and up the value a splash and that they are nonetheless waiting to make a income. different definitely everyone seems to be stealing from shops alongside with Walmart and merchandising them on ebay. I basically observed on the information some couple who took they're toddlers into purpose with them and stole merchandise. the administrative of the shop took it upon himself to persist with them domicile. while they have been interior the domicile he regarded into the storage and there replace right into a significant pile of toys nonetheless interior the bins. the individuals have been merchandising the merch.on ebay and now they're paying for and merchandising intercourse for risk-free practices in penitentiary. Ha ha. It replace into on Dr. Phil.
