For the same reason you need us to answer your question. People like to hang out with other people. GOD desires to hang out with us but only if we choose to of our own free will. Very much like answering your question.

Because God is powerful, but also shy and insecure. He gets lonely up there in the clouds and wants to be sure that people won't hurt him when he shows himself.
I hope you laughed at that.
Seriously though, the idea of a perfect God needing or even wanting us to love him is absolutely ridiculous, and I am astonished everytime I meet mature people who believe such things.

God does not need us to love God. We need God.
God wants a relationship with us. We were created with a soul which desires this relationship. To deny this part of us is to deny why we were created.

Salvation is given to those who accept the gift on the Son of YHVH _ YAHOSHUA. We need to love Him for our own good, and to be in harmony with truth. He is Truth. He created mankind for friendship with Him. I feel a little awkward putting YHVH and need in the same sentence. But He needs us to love Righteousness, and He is Righteousness!

GOD doesn't need us to love HIM, in my opinion. But after all HE has done for us, wouldn't you think HE deserves it?

I don't presume he would "need" that but for the same reason perhaps that you would "need" your children to love you??
