"Pit Bull" is not a true breed.
The term 'Pit Bull' covers several registered breeds and crossbreeds. It's a generic term often used to describe all dogs with similar traits and characteristics often known by the public as "pit bulls".
American Staffordshire Terriers , American Bulldogs, Staffordshire Terriers and mixes of those and many others have been classified as "Pit Bulls" mistakenly. Yes there is a breed known as the American Pit Bull Terrier, but few people can tell that apart from other breeds. The APBT is a purebred dog, they are cousins of the American Staffs and Staff Terriers.
The AKC does not allow registering of the APBT but they do of the American Staffordshire. The UKC will allow both and they do set them apart as different breeds.
The breed standard for APBT is as follows.

APBT or American pitbull terrier's are a breed of their own a classified purebred and papered breed. a bull dog or bull mastiff or staffy or whatever are not pitbulls some people just call them pitbulls. American Staffys are closely related but not pitbulls. to make a pure bred dog you have to breed the dogs with no throw backs for at least 10 years

An American Pit Bull Terrier is not a crossbreed and An APBT is also a totally different breed than an American Bulldog, they don't even look alike. What makes them a PitBull is over 200 years of selective breeding.
