From what I've been told, they don't really hurt (you get novocaine), but its a pain in the *** to keep your mouth open for an hour or so.

Root canals them selves do not hurt. You will be numb through out the whole procedure. Most people who say they hurt are really referring to the pain they had that caused them to need a root canal; the abscessed tooth. You may experience some discomfort after the anesthetic wears off and that is why you are given pain medication, take it before the anesthetic looses it's effect and a couple of hours later take Advil or Motrin 600mg. This will help to prolong the effects of the pain medication and also work to reduce the inflammation and soreness. After the first day you can decide if you'll need any more pain medication but you should continue with all antibiotics until finished, and the Motrin for a few days unless the dentist tells you otherwise. The second day most people feel better. The tooth just aches a little from being worked on and your jaws ache from being open so long for the procedure. It doesn't sound like you have a severe abscess that is the reason for the root canal therapy to be done, so I don't think you will experience the "pain" that others say they cause. Just keep in mind it's not the procedure that hurts, it's the tooth ache that brought you in to have the root canal that's causing the pain. So if you're not in great pain right now, you'll be just fine. Hope I've answered your question and been of some help to you, good luck with your procedure.

its worse then having a digital block on your big toe, its worse then having wires pulled out inbetween your teeth with out local anistesia nor pain killers, its worse than rubbing yer fist across shattered auto glass pressed into asphalt. its the pain for the rest of your life not the pain of the operation.
