Depends what you are willing to drive. I got my current car for $750, 3 or 4 years ago. It's a 1993 Plymouth Acclaim (V6 version)- and it has been very good. The engine runs very well and I've only had to pay for regular maintenance and a few repairs but nothing major.
So yes if you look hard enough you can definitely find a decent car. But with my car, you know, its nothing fancy at all. No power windows, no nice rims, kinda boxy, etc. But like I said it is reliable, runs well, and low maintenance. Would I want to keep this car forever? No, but for now its great!

If you want to drive a car which gives you little street-cred then yes! Personally, I'd prefer the comfort that a newer car can give but I know that people just can't all have luxury cars. Is this your first car? If so then it's probably worthwhile only spending a little amount of money; this will let you build up a no-claims bonus on your insurance. But be aware that you will probably have to spend more money in the garage to keep it on the road.
Hope this helps.
