i have a ford 400 ci engine and a man is willing to trade straight up for a 429 cobra jet. but the 429 has a blown head gasket and is in need of a tune up. The 400ci runs great no problems. Is the trade worth it??

The Ford 400 has NO aftermarket performance parts available for it... I read a big article on that engine last month. The 400 is a good low power engine.... as in reliable... I would trade it for a 429 in 1 sec. Take the 429.... you would be crazy not to.

I would take this trade in a heartbeat. A regular 429 would be well worth the trade, but if you can verify that this motor is actually a Cobra Jet package, you would be getting a fantastic deal.

The casting numbers on a good CJ block should be D10Z-6061-A. This number refers to the four bolt main block. Any other number on the block would make it a two bolt main block. The two bolt mains were strong enough for most things, but for all out, hardcore racing you would really want the four bolt main block.

The heads on the CJ had larger valves, larger intake runners, and a slightly different combustion chamber. I can't find the head casting numbers at this time but CJ heads can easily by identified by their larger intake passages. The intake opening on a CJ measures 2.12 inches by 2.86 inches, a standard 429 has openings that measure 1.85 inches by 2.56 inches.

Ford only made the 429 engine for 6 years. They produced the 460 (which is the same engine with a longer stroke) up till the mid to late 90's. Some parts interchange with the 351 Cleveland series of motors (timing chains, distributer, etc.).

To make a long answer short: Yes, you should make the trade. Trading a 400 c.i. for a 429 Cobra Jet would be the equivalent of trading your mother-in-law in for a night with the playboy bunny of your choice. You just can't go wrong.

Though if the guy wants to sell the engine outright I might be tempted to keep both. But I'm greedy.

Anyway. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. May all your deals be as good as they seem. FORDS RULE!!!

dude I would trade and store that 429 because its worth some bucks and in 10 years its gonna be worth a crap load. Those 400's are a dime a dozen in the wrecking yards but why dont you just keep the 400 and buy the 429 and store it?

I would have to take the FE 429 engine. There aren't that many of them running around nowdays. As for the head gasket, I would think that you'd rebuild it before installing it in any car or truck.

I would for sure do that because the 429 is alot harder to find

No. If it has a blown head gasket who knows how hot that guy ran the motor. For all you know it could be in need for a rebuild. I'd stick with what I've got.
