Can I get past this "new PC only" stuff? The hard drive on the computer that this was originally installed on is gone so I'm trying to ipgrade my old standby which has windows 95.

It doesn't matter any more. You don't need to register WIN98, as it is past the licence requirements. Go ahead and install it.

When you bought your computer,you bought it with a win98 original cd...
So that's why it is labelled that way...to upgrade simply format your partition under ms-dos and then install new OS.

reformat the drive with win95
then install Win 98

Why not install a current up to date OS. Get XUBUNTU its free from http://www.ubuntu.com
