Absolutely. The fact is that pollution is a cost incurred in the process of doing business. The oil companies have been very skillful in shifting that cost onto others (especially the taxpayers). And, of course, pocketing the money they save in the process. But when their conduct creates costs, they should be required to foot the bill.
Of corse, the neocons won't agree--they want accountability only for everyone else, not themselves or their friends.

Even tho I agree with you on some one paying the clean up , lets face it it is all our faults , they would say .... " no one forced you to by the gasoline " and that is true , the oil companies since the beginning of the motor era produced gasoline and all the plastics that we now enjoy from the oil they puled from the ground , I am not trying to excuse them ,but we relay became blind to the happening because we were enjoying the new products , the computer we have in front of us comes from oil , every thing of plastic around the world is oil by product and even tho we recycle the plastics it already have been used from oil extraction , now the subject of autos and the use of gasoline blame it on the over-population with the expansion of distances between work and home , but yes it was car manufacturers more at fault for offering us more guzzlers of fuel instead of going for the environmental friendly, just the basic necessities to move from one side to the other, with out having to go with un-necessary luxuries and powers, that use so much fuel for nothing ,so it is the public at fault and is up to us to pay for clean up for choosing to buy what was offered to us by the car manufacturing industry , they should also be liable for their products .

It should be so expensive to pollute that it isn't worth it to them to do so.
They should pay for clean-up and then some!
Right now, it's much cheaper to pollute than not, so they have no incentive (sub-humans that they are).
The *ssh*l*s who decided to ship oil in single-hulled ships, thereby causing the Exon-Valdez spill should have been made to clean up the mess with their tongues.

Yes, but to follow that argument to its end, then they should make us pay for using that oil and continually making bad, uninformed decisions. I think the blame game is going to waste too much time. We all need to act in unison to fix the problem and do it now.

They produced the product and we used it to pollute... I never owned one, but how many SUV's are in your garage that you used to haul a bottle of water home from the grocery store and never saw off road conditions?

If life was perfect, sure.
Life is not perfect and we're all going to have to pay for it, SUV owners and hybrid drivers alike.
