Some cats just love attention. If you are near them, they feel loved. My cat right now is calling me, but it is to play with her windup fish. Just pet your cat. It may also be that he feels you don't spend enough time with him. Just set up a time that you play with him everyday, and it should lessen.
p.s. i don't mind when my cat acts like this, i think it is cute!

I had a cat that was like that - to the extent that he's eat dry kibbles only from my hand! I have two cats at present - one is very independent and will eat where-ever with or without a companion. The other one will eat only inside my room and will not start eating unless I crouch down with him. But after he starts, I can usually leave him alone. I think it is an emotional or behavioral thing with some cats.

I have three cats. One of them will come up to you and meow and walk toward the food dish so we often will follow him thinking he is out of food, there will be food in the dish and he will start eating while your watching and often wants you to pet him while he is eating. He will purr like crazy when you do this, and this is a cat that never purrs. If you walk away when he is eating he will walk away and not eat. Its kinda cute actually.

We had cats at the San Francisco shelter where I volunteered that were labeled "affection eaters" - they would only eat when a human was with them.
Though cats don't commonly do that, who wants to eat alone anyway?

Like some humans, cats just want to have companionship. And they love you, and want to be there when YOU eat, so they want you to keep them company while THEY eat. I have a cat who won't eat AT ALL unless I'm there with him.

he probably won't grow out of it, we had a cat several years ago that insisted on being petted while she ate, so we petted her while she ate, it was rather bizzar as she'd purr loudly and be crunching her food at the same time...
the cat we have now likes to have someone in the kitchen with her when she is eating,
i think individual cats have different ways and some of them like company to eat with.

That is so sweet. Mine won't eat if I am watching. If I am around she is always more interested in what I do.
