It is recommended you get a International Driving Permit (IDP). If you are planning on renting a car it will be required.

Yes you can.

However, it may be worth your while to get an "international drivers permit" (You can get this from The AA). In the event that you get pulled over by the Police in Canada, the IDP will save you a trip to the police station since they will not be able to access your British driving records from the patrol car. The IDP will allow them to verify that your drivers license is valid without having to contact the British authorities.

For a limited period only. Conventional wisdom says to carry an International Driver's Licence but I've never come across a mountie or cop in Canada who knew an International Driver's Licence from a bale of hay.
