My dog only licks me in the ears. I thought she just loved my ear smudge but when I took her to the dog park the other day, I noticed several dogs (during their ritual sniffing) pausing for ear licks.

Why do they do this?

It shows place in the pack hierarchy and is just their way of shaking hands and saying hello.

I've included some links on dogs and face licking which also applies to the ear licking.

The ears (of dogs and humans) emit body heat very subtle scent. Dogs sense of smell is 100 times as sensitive as ours, so they smell what we can't.
