Is it mainly just the ingredients and methods? Or are their other factors? And is it worth pushing out that much money for a single bottle on an occasion?

Quality of the grape. Age. Brand.
The way grapes are grown (viticulture) and how they are subsequently made into wine (vinification) are the two main factors that effect quality in wine.
Quality is assessed best by tasting, not label.
There are quality classification systems within the EU that give some guidance; a Country Wine (Vin de Pays) ought to be better quality than Table Wine (Vin de Table) because of the wine production laws in place. So as a general rule of thumb the higher up the quality scale the better the wine should be. As with any industry, there are those who take pride in their product and produce outstanding wine within the quality category, and those who do just enough to remain within its boundaries, hence there will always be variation.
Wines produced outside of Europe are not governed as much, making it harder for the consumer to identify the better wines. Market forces, i.e. the price is often the only guide, and by establishing whether the wine producer has a good reputation. Quite often wines made from single-vineyard grapes are good quality - some vineyards provide perfect growing conditions and so the fruit quality is excellent e.g. Pfeifer Vineyard owned by King Estate makes outstanding Pinot Noir wine.

Old vines usually produce fewer bunches, but they are generally of higher quality. Consequently wines which state that they are made from "old-vines", vieilles vignes, are usually better than average quality.

I was going to give you the flippant answer of $270. But there is a difference between a $30 bottle and a $300 bottle. Two factors determine price. The first is the history of the wine producer. If a winery consistantly produces top quality wines the likelyhood is far greater that any wine from a particular winery will be good. The other factor is growing conditions. this differs from year to year and climate to climate. The best wines tend to come from marginal clmates and soils. The longer the hang time of a grape or the slower the grapes are allowed to mature gives more flavor and complexity to any given wine. All things are relative if you are used to drinking the $8-10 wines from your local market than a $30 bottle will taste fantastic.

Mostly snob appeal, or (if you are an optimist) rarity.
The intrinsic value of a bottle of wine tops out somewhere very near $24 a bottle. The rest is a search for scoring social points.

I improve roses in my backyard and get some roses. My neighbor grows roses and gets championship ribbons. We the two initiate with a similar components, yet she gets out of the common consequences ... why? basically positioned expertise, potential, time and attempt. The grapes themselves are surprisingly plenty a similar basically like roses, yet in assessment to many annual agricultural products like corn or tomatoes, grape vines can improve for one hundred years. it might take a number of many years earlier a vine starts off producing the main suitable grapes it could and require in intensity care all alongside. One occasion of ways those ameliorations could be performed is that if via climate this growing to be season the champion grower felt it maximum suitable to sacrifice 3 out of each and every 4 blooms so the flora would desire to commit all their energies to the the rest few blooms. interior a similar way an authority wine maker would sacrifice a brilliant element of the grape yield so as that something of the crop can mature to its finished ability. considered one of those care and decision making is going all the way throughout the wine making technique ... from growing to be, determination, processing, mixing, and getting previous. as an occasion to get a $10 wine take truck fulls of one form of grape harvested from fields packed with youthful vines, juice them and ferment them in huge chrome metallic tanks and after some months bottle it, label it, deliver it, and sell it. To get the $3 hundred bottle of wine you will routinely would desire to enhance many varieties of grapes with vines 50+ years previous, and intently nurture small batches of grapes to get basically the main suitable. Then hand go with all and sundry, and technique small batches with the main suitable care and potential achieveable, adjusting the mixture to the features that the grapes are exhibiting that particular 3 hundred and sixty 5 days, then age and computer screen them in specifically chosen barrels. Even then getting those lofty fees would relax heavily on your potential and acceptance for producing those stronger products interior the previous. Does that make a $3 hundred wine 30 situations greater efficient than a $10 one. It relies upon! Is a Ferrari 30 situations greater efficient than a mini-van? some would say 1000 situations, and others ... nicely a Ferrari would desire to no longer be very useful getting groceries or taking the youngsters to soccer prepare now's it?
