RMS is the constant power your amp can send to the speakers. It is always lower than the max output. The max is pretty much what the manufacturer could get it to do for a short period of time. It makes it look better on the box to say it's 1200 max watts than to say it's 800 watts rms.

MAX is the most useless means of defining watts.

RMS is the more accurate definition.
