my cat is 9 years old and has been run over a couple of times and had his jaw wired up and some of his teeth sawn off. Im just glad he's still with me but his breath is getting worse and worse. What should i do - i live in north london and havent a clue where to go... he also has one eye (from accident) and his tick, whichmakes him scratch himsel,f is also getting worse.. random question i know but i love him so much and im not that bang into vets as the last one told me his teeth to be cleaned would be 250 squids and he would have to be put to sleep and im not sure he could handle anymore operations...any ideas?

I'm sorry to say but he really needs to see a vet and have his teeth checked or rule out any internal problems. Maybe you can call around and see if there is a vet that charges on a sliding scale or will take payments. There is more than one vet in the phonebook, I'm sure.

Good luck. I know you love him but he will thank you for getting him out of, what could be, a painful situation. Do you have an animal control center in London? Maybe they might have someone they could refer you to.

Well, it sounds like he's got tooth decay and maybe even gum disease, both of which a vet can try to treat depending on how bad it is. If his teeth are decaying, they will eventually begin to hurt him and he may get nasty to everyone, might stop eating because it hurts too much. And as the decay goes deeper into his gums and jaw, the bacteria will go into his bloodstream and spread, which will kill him. His nasal cavities may get infected. Etc. If his gums are diseased, his teeth will start falling out, literally, until he has no teeth left, and like the teeth, the bacteria will spread into his blood and facial cavities making him very unhappy, nasty and sick. Isn't he worth 250+ "squids"??? A vet will be able to tell you whether he'll probably be able to withstand another sedation. If he'll let you, you can try brushing his teeth (they have cat toothbrushes (which I think are still to large for a cat's mouth) and cat toothpaste (usually flavored with some scent that I don't think would make his breath smell better--not sure who decided liver flavored toothpaste was a good idea).. If his teeth are in good enough condition, they sell dry cat food that is supposed to help keep their teeth clean (big balls of kibble so the cat has to crunch it down).

Garlic tabs. Go to a pet store and look in the vitamin section for garlic tabs. If you can't find them or are unsure of what to look for, just ask someone who works there to show you the garlic tabs that are safe for small animals/cats. Crush the garlic tab into his food and you should see results within 2 weeks. Garlic is a natural way of warding off bad breath in animals. Make sure to only give the cat the amount called for.

just like humans, animals need their teeth cleaned daily. in the us, you can buy a soft toothbrush and toothpaste in the pet store for a few dollars. there are also many "treats" which contain ingredients to freshen breath, but i believe that brushing provides the greatest benefit.
p.s. i'm not sure what the difference is between pet toothpaste and the ones we use, but since our toothpaste contains warnings about not swallowing it, i wouldn't recommend using it on your cat.

This happened with my jack russell. Take your cat to the vet and ask to get his/her teeth checked. My dog had 4 teeth taken out but now he smells as sweet as a daisy :-)
