How did nuclear proliferation cause the Cold War?

It was a sympton of the Cold War, not the cause. The monumental distrust between Joe Stalin of the Soviets and Curtis LeMay of the Americans that caused the Cold War. Nuclear proliferation kept the war cold, since it would've been madness to have a hot war. A 'hot war' would spell global suicide and annihilation of the human species....

Nuclear proliferation did not cause the Cold war. The Cold War was already brewing toward the end of World War II, because of the growing disagreements between the U.S. and Russia. Then these disagreements became more hostile and open right after World War II, although Russia did not yet have their atomic bomb until the late '50s. But the Cold War was already there.

Your question actually answers itself. The 'proliferation' caused a standoff with the USA & the USSR. Neither would ever have started a 'hot' war with nuclear (not W's nucular) weapons - total annihilation would have occurred. The USSR wanted to expand. The USA and allies wanted to prevent it. The USSR really pushed the envelope in 1962 with missiles in Cuba - the story is endless. Must say, even the USSR got out of Afghanistan!! - not a point of your question, but just a shot at the present situation.

The cold war started almost as soon as WWII ended.
Nuclear weapons were used as deterrents to war (MAD - Mutually Assured Destruction).

The cold war started over disagreements with the distribution of Germany between the allies after WW2.

Althought nuckear weapons were used at the end of WW2 by the US, this was not the cause of the Cold war.
