First go to seatguru.com; they have lots of info about the size of the seats on the planes. Seat size varies from airline to airline, and even from plane to plane within the same airline, but you can get a good idea of general sizes. Some planes like the CRJ commuter jets have very small seats, but other planes like the ERJ's give each traveller a few more inches of space. Take the measurements and measure yourself in a chair of the same size to see how you will fit.
Consider purchasing a second seat if you do not fit into one seat. You should call the airline to do this, not do it online, in order to ensure the second seat stays with your other seat--- I've seen large passengers have their reservations fouled up online and even though they have two seats, the two are not together.
Consider purchasing a first-class or a business-class ticket.
Consider purchasing your own seat belt extender and bringing it with you; normally the airlines provide these free if you request them but I've seen passengers be put off of planes when there were more large passengers than extenders available.
For what it's worth, you do not see spacious accomodations on planes because people are really cheap; if the airline made the seats bigger and more comfortable, they would not be able to fit everyone on one plane and they'd have to raise the prices.

If your traveling overseas in a large plain then you could get a business class seat or first class, those seats are like the armchair ones you are talking about. (at least they were on American Airlines on my way to Germany) Otherwise, you can purchase two seats side by side and lift up the arm rest.

I am a very large woman and recommend the following:
A. Buy your own seatbelt extender at: http://www.extend-its.com;
B. Check seat sizes at: http://www.seatguru.com;
C. Always get an aisle seat on a aisle of three seats. If you book on-line you can see if someone is in the middle seat & take that row. It doesn't mean there won't be someone there when you board, but it doesn't hurt; and
D. Southwest is infamous for charging for two seats. Continental has always been nice about giving me a seatbelt extender.
Even though I carry alot of weight in the booty, I can sit w/the arms down, although it does get uncomfortable after a number of hours.

Try starting by getting your health back-you could travel by car to a camping/hiking area and do some physical activity. Your health would improve and you are sure to lose weight. Take a weekend excursion to a nearby lake and swim, canoe, hike, bike-even lay on a boat-but dont bring along the chips and beer. After doing fun things like these that are fun, and a new experience, before you know it you will have lost enough weight to not have to worry about airline seats. Also, fyi, first class seats are a bit larger than coach seats. Just call to see what airlines HAVE first class.

If they fly where you are or want to go to, try flying with Midwest Airlines' Signature Service. All of the seats on 717 aircraft are extra big for plenty of space. I love the seats on Midwest Airlines.

are you sure.. i would think in order not to fit into the chairs you would have to be tipping the scales at 500 or more.. i could call the air lines and ask them about their seats and the sizes... with so many americans gaining wieght these day i am sure they must have made some accomdations

the airlines can no longer deny passage to obese those which could be discrimination what they could do is value them for 2 seats, an extremely hurtful and embarrassing factor to happen to somebody.
