Is it safe to keep a 10L gas can full of gas in my car for emergencies, or should I keep it empty?

Are you a smoker? I would hope not cause a small spark from the lighter will ignite the fuel. Also make sure the gas cap of the container is approved for Gasoline and says "FOR GASOLINE" on it. There should be another cap and make sure it's closed, this will vent vapors. I used to work at a gas station and when a fuel delivery was coming in, I asked him about what would happen if you dropped a lit match in the holes. He stated that the liquid part of the gasoline might shoot out a small flame. With the vapor side though, would be the worst explosion ever and take out a good chunk of the city. Make sure that the container is grounded and cannot move. In case of a Thunderstorm, depending where you are, if it's grounded(touching something to the car flush with the bottom of the can) this will prevent lightning from igniting the vapors. You'll be safe as long as you're careful and read warning labels. In inclement weather like snow, you may want to carry a full container of fuel to add extra weight to the rear wheels so you don't slide. Then if you run out of fuel, instead of calling a tow truck or walking to the nearest gas station, you can quickly add fuel right there. When you od fuel from the container, then you open up the vent so vapors can flow freely. I hope this helps.

Grandpa used to do it all the time, cause he didn't know when the next gas station would be. I'd be afraid to keep a full can in city driving, as long as there are gas stations around, i'd just keep an empty can, and get AAA.

If you're doing a lot of traveling on rural roads where gas stations are few and far between it might be a good idea. Other than that, why take the chance?

NO! Do not keep this in your car. There are gasoline substitutes that are available although a quick search on google couldn't locate it. It is a bit expensive but it is much safer to carry in the vehicle.

It certainly is OK. I have carried a full can in my trunk for years and only had to use it once. Be sure to buy a container specifically manufactured to hold gasoline

The best place to carry gas is in your tank.
