It requires some balance & common sense in this area, I think. On one hand, we are not supposed to parade our religion around in public solely to glorify ourselves like the pharases did, but we are not supposed to be ashamed of it either -- since we were supposed to be setting a good example for the rest of the world (Jesus said that if we were ashamed of him, then he would be ashamed of us, and that one does not light a lamp just to hide it under a basket; a city set on a hill cannot be hid.).
God knows everyone's real motives in this matter, and God will judge.

If Jesus prayed in the dark, closed his eyes to what the church was doing, and hoped no one saw him, things would be very much different today. Instead, Christ prayed in front of villages and cast out demons (yes, there really are demons,) he told the church that what they are doing was wrong, (and they are the ones that asked the Roman government to crucify Him,) and he was always traveling city to city preaching, (in fact, his boat was almost sinking during a storm and that is when Peter started to walk on water.)
If your views don't exactly line up with Jesus's views about what a Christian should be, ask yourself what religion you are following.....I'm not spouting off like I'm right, it is true or false, but I could really care less what you think of me, its where you end up and that is what Jesus asked of us, to tell people about God.
These Yahoo answers have been fun for me since many people email me and say how "uneducated I am or how much I have offended them...." If you take Yahoo answers that seriously, then why did you write your question on the internet where tons of people could share their opinion, I ask. Point is, my goal is to share the Gospel, not to make friends, so hopefully you have heard now, and will share what you know with other people.

Christianity???What is that accept the beleif in Jesus The Christ.
Now that that is out of the way, Every Little Sect of christanity looks at it differently, about how to interpret the bible, how to worship, whether or not you have to go through Jesus to get to heaven instead of just worshipping god.
Different sects (catholic is a sect, anglican is a sect, Presbyterian is a sect), Beleive..you think bad thought you go to hell, another beleives, you think bad but repent right away you won't go to hell, another sect beleives if you break the 10 commandments, you go to hell, others think as long as you repent your ok
Some think if you repent on your deathbed, all is forgiven, Some mainstream christian religions beleive the creation happened 8,000 years ago, and science is wrong about it being here for over 5 billion years.
All all sects think they are following the true path and the others are mis-lead.
So beleive what you want, you are covered, don't pick on the other guys cause they think they are right, not you.
I'm glad I stay away from this religous nonsense

Think of Ted Haggard as the Pharisee during Jesus' time.
Ted Haggard preached in the megachurch just as the Pharisee preached in the synagogue.
Ted Haggard engaged in sex with men. The Pharisee was likely to engage in sex with both men and boys according to the Talmud. Already, both men openly ignored the ban on homosexuality in Leviticus.
When Jesus ascended into Heaven, the Pharisee continued to preach in the synagogue and send students like Saul to persecute Christians. When Saul became Paul, someone merely took his place.
The Pharisee was driven away from Rome in AD 70 but found another synagogue to continue teaching hatred.
Christianity gained critical mass. Christianity experienced schism. In 1515, the Pharisees found their voice by trashing Catholic churches to the shock of Martin Luther.
The Pharisees gain strength and political power (e.g. Pat Robertson) while the Christians reeled from the Enlightenment, Communism, Hitler, Athiesm, Modernism and Post-Modernism.
We return back to the days of the Pharisee boasting and the devout Christian being oppressed. Instead of gladiators, we have the NFL. Instead of feeding people to the lions, we send them on "Survivor."
To me, sounds like nothing has changed but the one poster's excellent application of the parable of the Lord is a good example of where Christianity stands today.

I am not a Christian. Thank you for this question. I have a thought that may enrich your statement. The word "proselytize" does not appear in any of the Bibles I own and Jesus was a Rebbe (teacher) not a Charismatic promiser of paradise or a user of the threats of "Hell Fire." Both, paths put many people off. Jesus was a Jew and Jews never Proselytize. I would think to "follow Jesus" one would have to teach from full knowledge and treat all with gentleness that would not frighten any from 9 months to 90 years of age. Spreading the "Word" is not beating people over the head with it or twisting it into a threat.

No you are very right, I hate to point out. Many Christians I have met are quit mean, and hurtful towards me and many others. All I can do is wonder What Would Jesus Think about this. By the way I am Wicca but I was Christian in my younger years.

pricey existence, in reality, there is not any route to Enlightenment. searching for Enlightenment is like searching for heat water once you're status in warmth water at a Caribbean sea coast. you're already there. You in trouble-free terms grow to be conscious of it no longer. Christianity would properly be one thanks to take the scales from ones eyes to make certain and experience the reality. it isn't the in trouble-free terms way. there are a number of of Buddhist traditions that are fairly solid at helping people adventure Enlightenment considering it is one in each and every of their conventional purposes. in some unspecified time sooner or later, at the same time as one reaches Enlightenment, all religions are seen for what they are and discarded. God can not be contained through a e book or a faith. Take care.

the wonderful thing about christianity is that you are free to express your beliefs as you like... pray.. talk to God.. whatever.. you can do it :---
with others...
or on your own...
preaching on a street corner ...
singing in a choir...
or out walking in the town
out hiking in the mountains or hills..
in church on a Sunday...
... when you go to bed at night...
when you wake up in the morning..
God is always but always listening...
and always with you...
its fabbi and liberating...

It's not nice to need to say this, but it's true. Many Christians today are as self-righteous and interested in appearances as the Pharisees and Sadducee's were.
