He stinks of urine! Can i wash him or do you have to way awhile before getting him wet after his operation? It's sunday and my vet is closed so any advice would be great!

Thanks!

DO NOT bathe him as the surgical area needs to stay dry. If it gets wet, bacteria can grow and he can get a bad infection. You can take a wet washcloth and try to get the urine off other parts of his body, but keep the surgical area dry.

He will very likely take care of this himself over the next couple of days. His lack of urinary control is pretty common in recently-neutered male cats; it WILL get better. It's best not to attempt to wash him right now; instead, put him in a quiet room with his own small litter box, food, water, and a place to sleep; keep an eye on him, but for the most part simply leave him alone to recover. He is far more sensitive to odor than you or I, and will clean himself fairly quickly, assuming he is otherwise healthy. If by chance this hasn't happened in a few days, then contact your vet, but for now, give him a chance to take care of himself.

Do not bathe him. Don't even attempt it. It's a novel idea to try and bathe him while keeping the sutured area dry, but whoever heard of a cat holding still during a bath? If you try, he WILL get wet EVERYWHERE....and he's supposed to stay dry for a while. Did they send you home with a sheet of recommendations? It should state how long he should be kept dry.

If you want, you can get some of those pre-moistened pet wipes and rub him down. But you really don't have to worry about it....he will take care of himself with time.

Recently just happened to me. I just took a washrag and wiped him down. That way I didn't touch him where he had surgery. He then continued cleaning himself. He was fine and smelled a lot better.
