the heat in your body comes from the break down of the food you eat, in the equation:
glucose + oxygen = water + carbon dioxide + ENERGY.

You also get energy from movement of muscles, which is why you shiver when you're cold.

why can't people harness this power? i don't know, though i would think that it is to do with the fact that it still produces carbon dioxide, and no one really understands the workings of the cells in your body that produces this energy.

What we ingest produces energy in our body and this involves some pollution as you are well aware. Hopefully Dr. Oz Oprah's friend would provide more insight. Actually a lot of research is going into the alternative energy. Although all forms of energy use will involve some form of pollution.

It is not ATP that causes the heat. Body heat is produced as a waste product during metabolism. So it is the enzymes that are part of metabolism that causes this heat.

In bed it feels like you get hotter because of the heat exchange between yourself and the covers/mattress. However I cannot remember how body heat is actually generated (rather annoying) so i'm off to look it up later!

Most reactions in the body produce heat as a product. Digesting food is one.
