hi, my freind has gotten a new house, and there has been sightings of a cougar around the area. I actually have a wildlife camera that takes pictures of any thing that moves, and i want to get a picture of one becuase i live in the North-East, and if i get a picture of one that would be amazing, and i would tell people to extend the map of the cougars out to the North-East. Yes, i do want to ATTRACT a cougar into his yard so i can get a picture of one. I have put the camera behind his house with some cooked steak, and i just got curious deer. I no that deer attract mountain lions, which is good, but i really want to get a picture of one. I only want experts that know what they are talking about please.

thanks

This would be cruel to the cougar to trick & attract him/her. Please don't. The minute they extend the map of them to the northeast people will want to hunt them more. Allow them their mystery.

The cougars I've seen usually hang around small game trails. Find the rabbits and you'll likely find the predators. I'll tell you though, if you want to be sure that he saw a cougar stay out all night. You and your friend need to do a back yard camp out and just listen. A cougars call sounds like a woman calling for help out in the woods. It'll send chills down you spine. Good luck.

The fact that there is ONE cougar in your area won't get the map of their range extended...there would have to be a more well documented population.

the last thing you want to do is attract a cougar into a populated area and put others especially kids at risk. they will kill a kid just the same as they will kill a family pet. you are playing with fire and you should think about the repercussions of your actions first and for-most.
i live in the interior of British Columbia and spend a lot of time outdoors hunting, fishing and hiking. i have been stalked by one and was very happy i was carrying a rifle with me. i did not have to shoot it but i walked 5+ kilometers with it on my shoulder before i got back to my truck. a friend had to shoot one at less than 20 feet that was about to pounce.
think very carefully about what you are about to do just to get a picture.

Try raw meat. Or better yet go get a cassette tape of a wounded rabbit predator call from a sporting goods store. Put the meat out were the cougar can easily find it and set the rabbit call on an old tape player near by.

The wounded rabbit call will bring in any predators such as bears, wolves, coyotes and cougars.

I'd love to see the pics if you get one.

I do what is known as Nuisance Wildlife Control for my State.
I operate with a license and permits from the Department of Wildlife as a subcontractor.
Essentially a Bounty Hunter.
I have dealt with this Super Predator.
My advice is don’t , this cat if he/she is not weary of humans could and very well may be dangerous, and in most stated illegal to feed for a good reason.

I do understand you don’t wont to catch it, you just wont to photograph it.

But stop to consider the consequences if you do by chance attract this predator with food, it very well may keep coming back looking for food once you decide to stop.
He/she may start taking domestic pets to make up for your lapse your feeding them.
This predator has been known to kill and eat adult humans and children once it louses it‘s fear of man.
If it is hanging around an urban area it may have already lost it’s fear of man, and that not good.

One suburb 50 miles from my house have a Cougar problem that is still ongoing.
This predator so far has not harmed human as of yet.
What it is doing is hunting domestic pets in the housing area, and just got bolder now it has taken 3 medium size dogs while on a leash and being walked by their owners.

Now why is it still running free you might ask?
1= It’s an endanger species that has not endangered human life( yet ).
2= The law states only live catch traps can be used.
3= The Humane Society is supported by Local Law that states live bait cant be used.
This particular cat has not responded to meat scraps or any other bait used by one of my competitors in this line of work.
But if you consider this big cat is working on its own schedule in a large home range.
It may hit 1 or 2 times a month some times more some times it will miss a month.
This endangered species can not be destroyed or harmed until it attacks humans.
For those that thank just shoot it with a tranquilizer gun, you should see all the laws and liability involved in that one.
If by accident the cat has an allergic reaction to the tranquilizer and dies, the court battle to defend your self would bankrupt you and you still may go to jail broke.

First off Cougar have a very large home range.
Just because you see it yesterday you may not get the chance to see it again for a month or more.
If the home range was at the smallest size of 26 square kilometers that 16.25 square miles for a female.
If you stop to consider if you laid out a map of 16.25 miles your friends house would be a speck on the map.
Home ranges of females range from 26 to 350 square kilometers, with an average of 140 square kilometers. Female home ranges may overlap extensively. Male home ranges do not overlap with those of other males and typically encompass the home ranges of two females. They range in size from 140 to 760 square kilometers, with an average of 280 square kilometers.
That is 1.6 kilometers = 1 mile
