I have been having extreme back pain with sharp pains shooting down my leg. I had an MRI and was advised I have a bulged disc. They advised me going to a pain clinic. Is anyone know what they do there and are there any suggestions on how to ease my pain. My Dr. pretty much said I was out of luck.

Pain management specialist are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as yours. There is a subset of specialist who are specifically trained in interventional procedures. This is the one you need to see. He will probably want to do an epidural steroid injection in conjunction with the proper medications and physical therapy.

The pain clinic is going to teach you how to live your life in chronic pain. What the doctor is saying, is that your injury is not fixable by surgery,or surgery could make it worse, so conservative measures are being taken to address your pain issue. Is the injury stopping you from working? Do you go to physical therapy or to a chiropractor? Have you had massage therapy? What action have you taken other than being told to go to a pain clinic? Doctors do not like to issue pain killers on a regular basis as there is a growing trend of taking pain pills to get high, so now,the people who really need the prescription for the higher octane or narcotic pain killer must suffer for far too long before action is taken. I take a narcotic pain killer and the rules and regulations are something else, but well worth it cuz it helps ease some of my pain, you will never be pain free. Good luck.

Have your doctor send you to a Physical Therapist. They can evaluate your back and show you which exercises can take pressure off the irritated nerve in your spine. It will probably take a few months to get results, but it is far superior to taking pills or having surgery. A pain clinic will just give you painkillers and cortisone (antiinflammatory) injections in your spine. Also, go ahead and lay down with a cold pack on your low back. It will help decrease the inflammation.

My mom had a similiar problem. She had to have a discogram done. Not sure exactly what it was but her neck was pretty bruised up a few days after it was done.
