It's the gub that has the abscess and not the tooth. The gus becomes infected because of foreign bodies invading the tissue surrounding to tooth.

Yes it is possible. A simple blow or any kind of trauma to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks.
