I was in a similar situation for years. I have tried many doctors and many treatments. Most did me little good except empty my wallet. The best help I received was from holistic/naturopathic doctors. Most of today's medical practitioners do not cure anything. They just give you pills and charge you money. I did have some success with an Endocrinologist that found my glandular output was faulty. He helped me solve it, eventually without taking pills.

Aside from that, I have found adding more physical activity to be the single most valuable health change for me. Improved eating and sleeping habits have helped a lot. Staying away from coffee and other stimulants helps. Keeping a full schedule has helped so that I do not have too much time to dwell on disappointments.

I have had no depression episodes for the past few years, without any medications. I am healthier and happier than I was 20 years ago.

I suppose it depends on the severity of your depression, the circumstances and your age. The doctor isn't going to force you to take anti-depressants, but may just encourage it as an option. It wouldn't hurt to get a check up with your gynecologist because depression can definitely come from a hormone imbalance - - - which they can determine through blood tests.

My daughter is 17 and has suffered depressive episodes since she turned 15. She was placed on birth control pills for her hormone imbalance at the time, but it may be possible that the BCP itself caused her moodswings and depression to worsen. I'm not sure, but we have switched her 4 times now and she is currently on Yasmin, which is better.

She tried an anti-depressant (Paxil), but the side effects ended up being bad, so I took her completely off them. Now I treat her myself through a variety of methods which seem to be working. I warn you though, if you are going to try some of these things, you must be consistent and patent for several weeks to see if you see improvement:

1) nutritional supplements - - - - 2 capsules of Omega-3 Fish Oil (the coated capsules have no aftertaste); 200 mg. of 5-HTP; and 2 capsules of Evening Primrose Oil.
2) Not too many carbs - - - drink more water
3) she goes to a tanning bed 3 times a week in the winter months - - - the "light therapy" seems to help. Other than that, I suggest getting some fresh air and sunshine as much as possible.
4) Keeping a journal - - - drawing - - or some other way of expressing thoughts
5) Exercise - - - even walking a little each day will help
6) Talking things out with a friend/family member
7) and something new we tried last week is Aqua Detox - - -that is detoxing and balancing your body through a Detox foot bath. I know it sounds crazy, and some people call it a scam, but I swear, after having this done last Sunday, my daughter has not had one little depressive episode in 8 days. I can also tell it helped her complexion. She is going to have another one done next week. Since her depression is most likely a result of hormone imbalance, this is maybe why I could tell a difference with the Detox.

Good luck to you, and I also suggest checking out some books on cognitive therapy.

Well, it depends. You should go to the doctor so they can ask you questions, that way you can find out if its clinical or situational depression. I'm on anti depressants because I have clinical depression and it really sux cuz wen u forget to take them you're so out of it and upset when u dont take them. You may just have situational. If you do go to the doctor and they say it is clinical than ask them for Lexapro. That is the best anti depressant I have ever tried and I have tried a lot but this is just strong enough and it works great. Good luck, hope that helps.

Well you should not be afraid to seek the help that you need, and you do not have to take any anti depressives medication if you do not want to. There is no magic pill out there, nor a magic wand. So you do not have to worry about taking pills if you do not want to. Depression can be worked through,it is not going to be easy, but now adays, nothing is really easy. So just go and see a therapist and talk with him/her about what is depressing you, and work through those issues.

The brain dislikes having to relearn anything and will make unbalanced chemicals and discharge them into the spinal fluid blood . When we force our brain to deal with wrong expectations for love and sex we get an extreme anxiety called depression. These unbalanced chemicals are still in your brain fluid much later than when you were thinking about a stressful situation and these chemicals are the cause of your feeling so sad without reason. They are so powerful and we can be disinterested in everything that is happening around us. For others these chemicals make a real total body pain. There is a change in the body aura for each emotion change. If you can learn the six ways to manage your aura you can also manage change in your emotions. I had the experience of being totally destroyed mentally and had to learn it all the hard way. Only God can be trusted at the end. Every person will have to mange their own depression in this life.

To answer your question,no they can not cure depression, but they can manage it very well,,do not be afraid to take medication. If you had a physical disability i am sure you would have no problem taking medication, but because its mental you question its validity,
My success story is this,i suffered terribly with depression since childhood ,i then found out about Prozac, that was 15 years ago,but it has changed my life, everyone is unique, but you have nothing to lose ,be open minded and give it a go,,,from experience you may start to regain your positive thoughts within 10 days or so,good luck, mark

True clinical depression is not cured with anti-depressants, people take anti-depressants to help them with their depression and then they get therapy to work on their issues. You need to see a doctor and a therapist and go ahead and work out your problems depression just gets worse if you refuse to do anything about it.

I was on anti-depressants for a while but I came off them when they weren't working for me. A councellor was a better option for me as he taught me how to look at things differently and that got me through the worst part of it. He won't prescribe drugs but he will listen to what's bothering you and give advice as to how you can deal with it better.

Hmeopathy, Bach Flowers, Reiki, Aromathrapy... is a good comination if needed.

Prayer is one of the best solutions, but you need faith and patience. God bless you.
