For the most part, "proctologists" are doctors who went through their internal medicine specialty, then subspecialised in gastrointestinal. Believe it or not, the GI tract is a pretty interesting piece of anatomy, and while most people wouldn't want a job that involves putting your fingers in other people's rear ends, some people overlook this in order to help people with their GI problems.
As for everyone saying money, there are much higher paying professions (think dermatology, plastics, ENT, etc) that don't require putting your fingers anywhere near someone's rear end, so that isn't really valid.

This is the same question as "Which one of us is the most important part of the body?", as asked by brain, heart, stomach, and anus. The brain says, "Without me, you wouldn't know where to find food that we need to survive". The heart says, "Without me, you'd have no blood in which get the air and nutrients throughout the body". The stomach says, "Without me, we would not be able to process the food that we eat, and produce the nutrients". The anus says, "I know that everybody thinks I'm just an ***hole, but let's see how long you guys can get along without me!"
That's why we need proctologists, and that's why some people become proctologists.

Pay is good even by medical standards. Jobs like that that not many people want usually pay better, and also it's much easier to have a successful practice because there's not a lot of competition.
I still wouldn't want to do it, though.

You could probably ask that about dentist and foot Dr's. also,
someone has to do it, thank heavens,
there are people who specialize in proctology, it is a root cause of many problems, and it pays well.
