Take lots of pictures, and learn all you can. Don't stop reading. Don't stop taking pictures either. Look at everyday objects from a different perspective, whether it's up close, from an ant's eye view, or whatever you can think of.. And then take pictures of what you see. It sounds so simple, but it's a great way to learn.

Here are some things for you to research. Don't get bogged down by trying to learn it all at once. Take it one thing at a time.
-Composition
-Elements of Design
-Technical Stuff - ISO, aperture and shutter speed
-how your particular camera works.
-different types of light & how it affects what you see

Betterphoto.com has some highly-praised courses, though I have never taken them. Photography-on-the.net is great for Canon owners, though it tends to be focused on gear. I think photo.net is supposed to be good as well.

A book I really enjoyed when I was starting out was The Joy of Digital Photography by Jeff Wignall. It was certainly worth the money.

There is a home school that you can do in as little as 6 months or up to 3 years. New York Institute of Photography. It cost a little over $700 or you can do the payment plan at $30 month. Other than that use the How to Website.
Go to google and type in "how to photography" , it will give you several different sites to look at.

Honestly, reading about learning photography is one thing. What you need to do is hands on work. I sincerely think you should take classes. They will teach you more than reading about it or figuring it out on your own. You need to open your eyes and see what is going on around you. Also, for many it comes natural. I don't know if you have any artistic background but it does help to an extent. I went to art school and so the basic design courses also helped as well to get basic design concept. Those courses made my photos stronger. I hope this helps.

There are a lot of good books out there to be read. I have taken classes and even taught photography classes. One warning I want to give you. A lot of teachers really believe that their method is the only way to take pictures. I have always taught classes is any method that works for me might not work for them. One lesson I learned was to study pictures. Try to figure out where the light is coming from. A good photographer always know "where their light is coming from." Know how to "read" the light. Study magazines and books pictures. Use publishers that use only good photographers, like National Geographic. Also, Disney used to publish beautiful books of pictures.

Start by trying to copy other photographers work then experiment with your own style. A good photograph will tell you who took it. Study the picture.
