at least 1 hour a day, I would think but it really depends on the age of the cat, the build of the cat and the temperament of the cat. For example, I have a 1 yr old neutered male who will zoom around for about 1/2 hr at one session in the evening and then zoom around again for another 1/2 hour sometime later. My 9 yr old neutered male will zoom around for 20 mins to 30. mins in one session hen rest then zoom around again for another 15 to 20 mins later. Sometimes both become super active for longer than these periods. These are just the times they play indoors. I do take them out for "walkies" in the yard every day for 10 to 20 mins depending on the weather. Every day.
But I noticed that after 2 or 3 days of activity, both will want to laze around like lotus eaters on the 3rd or 4th day. On thses days, both will sleep and sleep and show no iterest in palying hard. On such days, I just put them both in their outdoor enclosure for their daily fresh air.
Next day, they will both be up and zooming around again. So, it depends on the cat really.

Whenever you take time to play with your cat...that's decent exercise. You should also provide a variety of things for your cat to explore and play with...catnip toys, toys with feathers, fuzzy toys...also toys that are glittery or make a skittering noise on a bare floor, they will play with. But only keep a few toys out for the cat to play with, and keep more toys on hand so they don't get bored.

Cat are famous for building muscle by stretching. there for they require less than most animals. If they are not fit it is either from over eating or an illness. Give them toys they can wrestle with or chase. They will do the rest.

um...
i think a cat should get a whole day outside
a cat iz a animal you should let it roam free
then train it to come back
and at least if you dont want it to go outside at least train it for 3 hours
