Being ex-military, I believe it should not strictly be by age necessarily. I know it would put a lot on the system, but young adults mature at different ages. Although you are eligible to get a driver's license at 16 (most states) you still have to take a class and pass a test to earn the privilege. I went into the military at 17 - with my ID, I could drink in ANY bar. I guess the bar owners feel if I'm old enough to die for my country, I can probably be responsible enough to handle some beer.

I think the legal age to buy alcohol should be 18 and keep bars and clubs to 21 and over. To keep drunk driving accident's down since most kids crash at a freinds house when drinking anyway not an option when your at the bar. Any military personal should be able to get into any bar or buy alcohol regardless of age just show your military id. They should be the exception. Just my opinion

That is a 'really good question' but I think that you are 'ignoring' the FACT that there are laws that are already 'on the books' for the legal age of drinking, and all YOU can 'do' is 'follow them' if you don't want to 'risk being arrested for breaking the laws' ... and since the 'age' of it being 'legal to consume alcohol' vary from state to state, I guess I should tell you that it 'depends on where you live.'

In most of the world where alcohol is legal the age is 18 or 16. The USDA's 21 is too high and causes its own abuse. I personally think it should be 14 for beer and wine served with meals with parent or guardian present.

It used to be 18 for drinking and smoking. However, for states to get highway funding they had to change it to 21. I think that if you're old enough to serve your country and vote, what's the harm in a beer?? Besides, when you go to college nobody cares if you're 18, 19, or 20. Somehow they made 21 this magical age to be responsible. Heck, hit the college campuses and you'll find out that 21 or 22 year olds aren't exactly that responsible.

Just my two cents.

18, which should be the same as the minimum driving age. Because it is unfair for a majority of citizens to deny rights to a minority on basis of age.
By this logic, should we (American citizens) deny Native Americans the right to drink because of the higher rates of alcoholism? Denial of rights to any group is wrong.
And military members cannot drink in the US until age 21.

I think the legal drinking age should be lowered to 18. That's the legal age for everything else nowadays. We can't legislate morality (which is why so many 18-20 yr olds get busted for drinking underage) but we can at least legislate consistency.

21. I worked in Restaurants and Nightclubs for 28 years. The drinking age was 18. 18 year olds do not fully understand what alcohol abuse is. The emotional maturity is lacking in 18 year olds compared to a 21 year old, especially in males (I hate saying that). 21 year olds understand better the consequences of their actions and also have more moral strengths.

If this country says that you're mature enough to shoot and kill people, then you're mature enough for a drink. You are declared a legal adult at age 18, so you should have all adult legal rights-period.

21.

Most teenagers are not responsible enough to handle drinking.

Don't give me the voting, smoking & military excuses. I know that active members of the military were able to drink on bases - regardless of their age.

So I guess that if someone wants to legally drink before they are 21 - join the military.
