Make sure you use a disc compatible with your recordable drive
(DVD-R/W disc DVD-R/W drive , or DVD+R/W disc on a DVD+R/W drive)

Check the front of the drive for Logos. Make sure the drive supports the speed of the Discs as well.

use Nero. Try the demo software first.
