Saying "Hi" is perfect. "What's up" means hello.

No, it's not impolite. I don't think they really want to know what's really up with you...I use it more as a way of saying "hi". When someone says "what's up?" I usually say "hey...". Never been called rude for it!

You could say "The Sky" and laugh. It's not impolite to say hi. I think it's a question similar to "How are you." It's just a greeting. I definitely laugh when guys think they are all cool and cut the greeting even shorter saying 'Sup' and lift their chin at the same time.

What's up is more a less just a way to hi in today's society. Any response with the same intent would be okay.

I say "nuttin, honey".
Nothing wrong with responding with "Hi". Unless they're actually saying "What's up?" as a question rather than just as a greeting.

Typically, I say, "Hey. What do you know?" When the person says "what's up," they're not actually asking you what is up, they're just giving you an informal greeting. Give 'em one back.
