I'm a 27 year old male. Last week I was referred to a female dermatologist for eczema who gave me a complete cutaneous exam after she asked one of her receptionists to be present. I was not offered a gown and when asked was told they didn't have them. She checked my back first, and then my front and I got an erection. I stayed this way for about 10 minutes until she said she was done and told me I could get dressed. The receptionist then left with the doctor. Later I was told I should have been given a robe or sheet, and it should have been a nurse and not a receptionist in the room with us. I'm not sure I should go back there.

There was no reason for the receptionist to be present in a situation such as this. If you do not feel comfortable going back there I would suggest that you ask for another doctor, there is no reason someone should be put through a situation like this. This sounds like something that you could try to file sexual harassment charges against if you so chose to.

i'm wondering if the fact you were sexually stimulated and embarrassment from this was the real problem. i feel in any case that a dr. feels less liable with a witness present during an exam. might be that they are tired of having charges brought against them such as the one suggested by a previous answer. it obviously is quicker and much simpler to have a full lookover of a naked patient than to scurry about trying to keep the obvious hidden. personally, i would have felt some discomfort in your situation, but i also have high regard for those professionals in the medical field. i trust them to use their best judgement and hopefully anything they do that will save time doing their jobs while at the same time protecting their integrity is quite ok with me. if you were disturbed by this episode, i suggest you toughen up a little as it only gets more embarrassing with age. you still have plenty to look forward to at around 50 when its common to have your hiney probed during an exam. finally if this is something you can't tolerate again, seek another doctor, or go to a place where they can afford gowns. i sympathize with you for being embarrassed yet see no fault on the drs. part. good luck with the eczema and hope ya get this worked out without further injury to your dignity
