Fancy phone? Sure, it will work- within reason.
Talk to your phone company about "worldwide roaming". They love it, they get to charge you an arm, a leg, and a kidney.
Short of a SATELLITE phone, however (and not all of them) you will find places, especially "outback", that simply have Zero coverage. I met some Japanese tourists in Woomera, SA with satellite phones that didn't work. Apparently, that model relied on a particular satellite- that focused ONLY on Japan.
SO- You might want to RENT a Satellite phone locally if you really plan on "going bush"

as long as your phone company has put on global roaming and its tri band, no prob. To make it cheaper, buy a pre-paid sim card here, but make sure your phone is unlocked
