If you want to send text messages to a mobile phone, you can use your e-mail account. Just compose a message as usual, but in the "to" field, just enter the telephone number of the phone (including area code) then add "@teleflip.com". It will automatically route the message to the correct phone without you even having to know the phone's service provider.
