Were you around some pine trees? Owls hang out in pine forests a lot during the day.

Depending on the species it is not uncommon to spot one during light hours. Great Horned Owls for instance tend to hunt during dusk and dawn. GHO's can't see in complete darkness they need a small bit of light. Here in Cali, there is a species of owl that breaks all of the rules, it is called a Burrowing Owl. They are primarily out during the day especially during migration. Burrowings are found all across the U.S. The will take over an abandoned burrow that was started by a ground squirrel or a rattlesnake. You might see them sitting on a bank of dirt on the side of the road. These owls are small about 9-11 inches tall long bare legs and brown bodies with a white eyebrow. While most owls are nocturnal that doesn't mean that they don't come out during the day.

I surveyed spotted owls one summer for the Forest Service and I can tell you that owls are out all day long...however they are usually in a roost tree. To find one during the day is not that unusual, they just normally stay still and rest for the night's activities.

I guess you can see them during the day, because my first husband, found a "Wounded" Barn-Owl" and we had to put him/her in our trailor, in the backyard, to keep it there until the "Wildlife" people came to get it...They told us they would simply take it and doctor it up, and then set it free back in the "Wild" again. It was wierd tho, when they came to get it... She told me, to shut the door of our camper, and not open it, after she went in it, until she knocked on the door.....And so I did just as she said, and she had these long gloves on that went up to her elbows, just in case the owl would peck at her, (I guess), and then she did the knock, and then I let her out! she had it in a cage, and they took it away......It was a "Georgeous Owl, too!!" It was solid white, with pitch black eyes!!! Just Beautiful!! So, if my first husband coud find it in the middle of the day, on the side of the road, than I reckon there out there during the day.... Smile!!!

it may have been spooked up by either you or an animal. They still have survival instincts all day long. I about messed myself one day out hunting when I walked under a bridge and had an owl with about an 8 foot wingspan fly out and pass about 3 feet above my head. Really an amazing animal.
