You have a great first step, since you don't want to use the internet. Reading something from a text message or email leaves out the other 90% of communication, the nonverbal part of it.

Tell this great guy that what he has said or did that you admire and would like to hang out with him more. A good idea is to have a get together with some of your friends so that he isn't put on the spot as this being a "date." My daughter does this all the time since she is so picky about her young men. She will invite a bunch of people over to our house for a spa party and then ask her guy friend over to hang out with them. It is also a good way for us, as parents to get to know the guy, as well, but if you are past the stage of living with your parents, then ask some friends for some help, too.

How I appeciate being told that someone "likes me" is straight foreward, and directly.
MAYBE at a nice outing to a PARK or a DINING ESTABLISHMENT, or some place where we can talk one-to-one seems most comfortable.
Also, I appreciate receiving suttle innuendos throughout my workday.
I recall once when I returned to my office and what to my suprise did I find a HALLMARK(r) I love you! basket sitting upon my desk.
Much to the gossip of my work colleagues, I made them think I had a liason on the side, out of town!
They still (26 years later) talk about that in the office, although she is no longer with us.
O-o-o-o-o-h! Autumn, your passing did leave me very distraught. - I miss how you "lift" my spirits when I most need it! You will always be in my heart!

I would just tell him you want to go to the movies or somewhere with him. I would then tell him after the movies or wherever you went, that you had a really great time and you hope you can do it again some time soon. That should let the guy know you like him.

I think that you should write him a short letter or even a poem. Now a days, guys actually like things like that.

say: "Ya know, I find you quite attractive."

Depending on his reaction, he'll return the compliment nad ask you out, have a big smile on his face or, the look of not being interested.

Ask him to the movies/for a drink/etc, if he says yes and it's something that's not a 'friend' type thing to do, you know he likes you.

Ask him out on a date, then tell him during the date, if you still do.
