My husband has an elbow like that. He's never set any alarms at court houses OR airports off that I know of. If you are concerned that you might, just get a statement from your doctor. The security officers will have hand scanners as well and can scan each area to know where the metal is. There are also sensitivity settings on teh alarms where most of the time things of that nature won't even register.

A year ago I had back surgery and now have 4 metal clamps in my back. Anyways the doctor gave me a paper saying that, in case I set off alarms at an airport. Thanks for the question it just reminded me to get my paper ready because I'll be flying to the states soon.

most of them now are titanium.stainless has a problem of the body rejecting them.I worked for a airline and have a 16 inch rod in my leg and flew over 3000 times. most of the time the detector would not beep.

you need to bring a medical certificate delivered by your doctor or the surgeon who did the surgery.
You'll still have to be patted-down by a security officer though...

You should have a card from your Dr. Chances are they will quickly scan you and let you go through.
