I have a very serious question regarding blood draws with syringes. I have had my blood drawn several times before but never really made a big deal out of it until I heard a friend of mine saying that he always pays attention and sees if the nurse is opening a new syringe in front of him...I never paid attention before to this thing which I guess was very stupid of me !

Now to my question...how do they make sure they dont make the mistake of re-using the syringe...I mean the mistake can be so easily done..the nurse uses the syringe, transfers the blood to the test tube, recaps the empty syringe, and then without paying attention put the syringe on the table instead of putting it in the disposer....and then, when the next patient comes, the nurse uses the same syringe on him...

how do u guys make sure u dont make this mistake ! I mean it is sooooooooo doable....

I am freaked out !

Our hospital uses retractable needles on IV catheters and on some premade syringes. So that means the minute I have started an IV, or given an injection I push a button and the needle retracts inside a hard plastic case inside the handle, thus is unavailable for reuse, then I casually toss it in the sharps container. OR, if it's not a retractable needle I hold it way up in the air and speed over to the sharps container and toss it in immediately.

BTW, I was taught to never recap any syringes, used or not, it's dangerous. The only reasons I can think of for doing this is if the person dropped dead or fainted and needed immediate medical attention, or more likely, the sharps container next to me is full and I hadn't already noticed. Either way, used needles may as well be burning hot in my hand, I can't wait to get rid of them.

Think about it, imagine how we health care professionals feel. You only get poked every once in a while, we poke people all day, every day, we've got way more chances to get stuck than you do. And we certainly don't want to get a blood borne illness either!

Needles and syringes are packaged individually in tear-open wrappings. Once a needle or syringe is used it is immediately discarded into what's called a sharps container. No medical personnel would think of picking up an unpackaged needle or syringe and using it on a patient. The chances of an error of the kind you described is nearly nonexistant.

Any good nurse would not recap a used syringe, nor would she not dispose of the syringe right away. I am a medical assistant, and I just went through a phlebotomy class were we where FORCED to put it in the sharps container every single time. no matter what...
If i were you, just ask your nurse, or phlebotomist to open the syringe in front of you every time, they dont mind... and even if they do, you have the right... dont be affraid to ask...

maximum hospitals and clinics have human being wrapped syringes and would not in any respect go away a needle or syringe on a mattress, chair or everywhere else, it would cost you dissimilar difficulty. There are protocols that each and each and every medical workers has to flow through to eliminate products which have blood or any human waste on it. we ought to flow through those guidelines that is the regulation. you have become freaked out over some thing which will not in any respect take position. we are no longer allowed to recap, till you need to do it with a one handed scoop, once a needle and syringe are used they bypass immediately in the container made for them. till you paintings in a health center or hospital you does no longer understand that there is each and every precaution taken to guard the nurse and her affected individual. this stuff are suggested as conventional Precautions and all medical paintings force makes use of them and knows them through heart, its our second epidermis.
