My cat is currently convalesing from an operation, and is being kept indoors to help prevent infection. i have got a litter tray for him to use, but as yet he has not been to the toilet, (hes still a bit dopey!) just after some tips, that would encourage him to use litter tray when hes ready as he normaly does his buisness outside.

I have always had great luck doing just what sharon w said...I would only add that I take the front paws and scratch them back and forth in the litter a few times..
P.S. I have never had to put poo in there from outside, I just started with clean litter.

In addition to finding some of his poop, create the litter from the place he goes. For example, if he uses the garden, fill your tray with dirt. If he uses the grass, as our former ferral did, put some grass in the tray. Then gently put your cat in the box with the customized litter. He may smell the scents and be motivated to add his own.

When he does finally experiment with the box by using it, praise him and tell him how smart he is and that yes, that's where his toilet is.

If you have a bathroom big enough to accommodate the litter box, place it there. That way you are teaching him that this room is the room where you both do your business. That may seem weird, but you are now his "alpha cat," and cats teach each other their social routines.

Best wishes with your cat! We're all hoping for a speedy recovery and applaud you in your efforts to make this as workable for everyone as possible.

YOU are going to have to personally take him into wherever the litter tray is set up and introduce him to it. He doesn't know it exists. Simply, pick him up and place him in the tray. He'll be curious, smell around a little, and maybe, if you're lucky--he'll even "go" on the first try. There is something in the cat litter itself that makes the cat want/need to use the bathroom. It is NOT difficult. Good luck to you.

Put the litter tray as close to where he's resting. This may sound gross but if there's a Poop of his or a friends, mix it in the litter. That's a signal it's OK to poop in here. Another suggestion, put him in it, simulate with his paws scratching in the litter UNLESS it is De-clawing he's healing from. It's a cats natural instinct to want to dig. Get Well soon Kitty.

It mean seem gross, but if you can find some of your cat's poop outside, then you can put it in the litter box and that should help your cat understand that he can do his business there.

I can't believe you let your cat run around outside. If you love your animal you won't let them run loose. Your cat should have been litter trained as a kitten, not now due to some operation. Keep letting your cat outside and I guarantee one day you will be scraping the kitty of the road or see it looking at you out of someone elses window.
