The best thing you can do is to leave the butter at room temperature for about 30 minutes. The easiest way is to measure the amount you're going to need for the cookie recipe, and just leave it in the mixing bowl you're using for your wet ingredients.

You can put the butter in the microwave, which will speed things up, but you run the risk of completely melting it. Try just nuking it for 5 seconds, then check it. Repeat the 5-second trick as necessary.

I have butter on the counter right now for cookies! The kitchen's always warm since we're always cooking. However, you can do one of two things. Put it in a bowl and put that bowl in another bowl of hot water. Or, put it on a burner safe pan, turn on the oven (for the baking of cookies anyway!) and put the pan on TOP of the stove. The heat will draft up and warm the butter without melting it.

(I'm having M&M cookies)

Microwave it in bursts of about 2-3 seconds at a time, turning it over so it doesn't get any hotspots and end up melting.

Leave it out at room tempeture for a few hours, the microwave is not a good choice because it cooks it and melts it on the inside.

Best way is to just let it set at room temperature for a few hours.. every thing else is going to melt at least part of it (microwave/hot water)

the best is to leave it out of the fridge in a cool place until it softens completely. If you are in need right now, cut into squares, put it in a bowl and then beat it with hand mixer until soft.

I beat the butter in a bowl with a wooden spoon, the wooden spoon helps brake it down. saves melting it to much in microwave.

Put it in the microwave at the low power setting and put it in there for intervals of about 20 seconds until it gets soft.
