In the car is exactly how I learned German. Here's what I used.

It's a site with High Quality MP3 recordings and PDF documents of written work to learn the written language. There are several levels from Beginner to Professional. The courses are far from boring, being based around a cute story about a man who's constant companion is an invisible imp. And best of all, it's free.
You can download the MP3s and burn them into a CD if you don't have an MP3 player.

More specifically, I recommend Pimsleur. Pimsleur is great because the program is specifically tailored with an aural approach to language learning, perfect for learning "on-the-go".
In addition, there are a variety of products priced on on how much you want to spend and how in depth you want to study.

guten tag! buy a cd or cassette tape that teaches you german. they are sold in book stores such as barnes and nobles. then listen to them with your car stereo, repeating the words and their meanings. practice pronounciation and meaning. there are probably different cds according to the reason for your trip, ex. travel/business/pleasure etc. find a cd that you think will provide you with the translations for most things you think you will need to say in german. viel gluck!
