The difference is getting a filling is like trimming your toe nails. A root canal is like getting your toenails ripped out! Except less fun.

root canal--removes dead pulp tissue

filling--restores a tooth with amalgam or composite and removes decay into the enamel and dentin, NOT the pulp

You will need a filling and most likely a crown after a root canal procedure. A crown is needed because the tooth will be very brittle and more likely to fracture after the root canal.

$$$
cavity filling hasnt affected the root
so it costs less
and usually hurts less
and takes less time
Root canals take several visits and usually cost a bunch$$$$
then they also need a crown more$$$$
good luck
