Why can't we handle the snow in this country? (UK)?

The question was raised again in the last big snow in 2004.
The answer is.. that the country cannot afford to invest money in to snow preparation the way that other countries do.
Because it snows heavily so rarely that the money put into the preparation would be used every 3-4 years, and it would cost more than it would save.

It's not a feasable option for this country.

Simply because we don't have snow long enough or in large enough amounts to master adequate handling. I noticed for example, there were less accidents in last weeks snow, than had it not been snowing. People obviously did take more care. I do feel however, the schools closed down to save a little extra money before the half term holiday. Apart from the 'worry' of children hurting themselves playing in the snow, and potential insurance claims etc., there was little or no need to deprive the children of enjoying the little snow they have.

When I was a child, as rough as children can be, no one was ever really hurt by a snowball or falling on ice.

People aren't used to it. However it has nothing to do with money preperation wise. Many countries in Eastern europe spend less on grit, ploughs etc than London does but they have to put on winter tyres even if it is a mild winter. They also have more experience of driving on compacted ice and living in a cold climate.
People in such countries are no different. - 20 is bloody cold for anyone but they know to wrap up warm, shovel the snow and scrape down the car. work goes on because it has too. If England had a few months of snow cover no one would bat an eyelid, work and studies would go on.
As an ex pat in the Baltics I've got used to it and it makes me smile when I read the shock horror media reports from the UK. This weekend it was -20. I haven't seen a gritter for two weeks and the roads are like glass but everyone keeps off the brakes, uses their gears and goes to work. Oh yeah, primary schools only shut at - 20 and secondaries at - 25 but us teachers still have to go to work. You know it is cold when the antifreeze goes into slush like last year:)

We have so little snow in this country why don't we all just enjoy it when it comes.
What is so bloody important that we have to keep doing our normal thing day in day out no matter what.
When it snowed the other day I cancelled all my work, had a great day and am doing all the work next week.
All the people who complain that the country grinds to a halt etc etc should just go and get themselves a life

What snow. I live in the north west and we haven't had any, well none to shout about anyway. Not even enough to make a snow ball. Its not fair we always miss out.

Because we don't get snow all the time in winter a snow plough costs £120,000 and to have enough to cope with all weathers we would have them standing doing nothing most winters

We are not used to it over here, i think thats why everything comes to a holt when it does snow. It's ridiculous really isnt it? =]

In countries where it snows all the time, they cope, so why can't we? Their schools/roads/sports clubs can't all close, otherwise they would never go anywhere?!

Tell me about it, we had it really bad in the west midlands on Friday, left work at 4.20pm got home at 9.00pm, took over 4 and a half hours to drive 12 miles - madness

Because if we could then we'd have to go to work, and it's a lot more fun to have snowball fights and a lie in! I like the way we get so pathetic once a year!
