Alaskan Malamute female, gets a good run in at least 4 times a week. She's a mid-aged outdoor dog and gets very little people food. Male partner dog eats the same food, gets same exercise, yet he's trim. Both dogs are fed according to amount of food for age and weight. Any helpful tips?

First thing to do is consult your vet. Dogs that tend to be heavy with sufficient exercise could possibly have a thyroid condition. One of my labs does and she is on medication. It's a simple blood test.

I have 4 labs and one mixed breed. I feed 4 of my dogs Iams (blue bag - the less active, lower calorie kind). There are numerous high quality "diet" dog foods out there.

Another thing I do for my labs since they tend to get chunky is I replace 1/2 cup of their dog food a day with a 1/2 cup of low sodium green beans. I basically replace the same amount of "bulk" with something that adds no calories and helps keep them full.

I have completely eliminated treats with the exception of those bagged mini carrots. They are crunchy but they don't add calories.

Talk to your vet about a thyroid test and ask him or her about a diet. You can ask about the green bean diet as well. This is something we suggest to many people who foster chunky labs with our rescue to help them lose weight. It's not a fast diet but they don't starve.

Good luck and keep up the exercise too!

Try a diet dog food for the female.
Keep the male on the same food that he is already on because it works for him.
You could also try taking her to her vet.
