the answer is that Fang is a neopolitan mastiff.
General Appearance
An ancient breed, rediscovered in Italy in the 1940's, the Neapolitan Mastiff is a heavy-boned, massive, awe inspiring dog bred for use as a guard and defender of owner and property. He is characterized by loose skin, over his entire body, abundant, hanging wrinkles and folds on the head and a voluminous dewlap. The essence of the Neapolitan is his bestial appearance, astounding head and imposing size and attitude. Due to his massive structure, his characteristic movement is rolling and lumbering, not elegant or showy.

Fang, Hagrid’s imposing but sweet-tempered “boarhound,” was actually played by four Neapolitan mastiffs. One of the mastiffs, named Bully, had been rescued from a junkyard. After the film was over, one of the trainers adopted him. The other three dogs used in the Harry Potter films are: Rayvonley Vito, Rayvonley Crispina (Bella) and Rayvonley Hugo. Fang

'Fang is a large boarhound who, aside from his enormous size, appears to be an entirely ordinary dog. While Fang's appearance is intimidating, he is, in Hagrid's words, "a bloody coward". Boisterous and loving with people he knows, he seems especially fond of Harry and at times, Hermione.

A boarhound is any of various large dogs, especially the Great Dane, used originally for hunting wild boars [6]. However, in the films, Fang is portrayed by a Neapolitan Mastiff.

Fang's name may owe something to one of Farmer Maggot's dogs in The Lord of the Rings — also called Fang."

Yep he's a boarhound alright! He was portrayed by a Neopolitan Mastiff in the movies. =)

"Fang" is a Neopolitan Mastiff.
If you are interested in adopting this breed make sure you do your homework, and you know what you are getting yourself into. These dogs slobber more than any other dog i've worked with, they also have the same skin problems as shar pei's and they have hip problems because they are heavy weights. Not to mention they eat ALOT and make big poop. This is an expensive dog to keep up. But goodluck to you!
