you mean hawker stands? Generally yes, but I have a sensitive friend that wasn't acclimated to the local germs and had gotten sick a few time from eating from them, just gets the trots for a few days. Most of the people I know haven't gotten sick, and I've never gotten sick from hawker stands, but I'm always a bit weary of shellfish. I've gotten food poisoning in Thailand twice, both times were from shellfish(once from blood cockles, another from muscles), and oddly enough both times were at high class restaurants.

Hi, food on the street in Bangkok is pretty safe. In fact sometimes you get a good stall selling real good Thai food and cost only a fraction of what you will be paying in a nearby restaurant.

I had eaten quite a few times on the street stalls without any problem It will always be good to check that the stall is clean and the owner too. Generally they will be. And how the raw food are stored/kept while awaiting use. These will help to determine if you could run into problem later.

One thing, buy your water from the supermarts. Avoid buying from roadside seller. I had seen how they got their supply and will not recommend getting from the roadside. Water is cheap there anyway.

So if you see a roadside stall that appeals to you, do stop by and have a treat.

Email me if you like.

Generally, I think the food is probably fresher and cleaner than in some of the more expensive hotels.. On the streets, they sell in volume - so, mostly cheaper and just as good though often different specialties..

As above, the last time I was sick from food here was eating a hamburger in a 4* hotel...

of course, you run a risk of different bacteria than you are used to, but I have had many friends come over from different countries and none have had problems..

It's safe if you take precautions. It all depends on what type of food you chose to eat. For a safe bet, we ordered piping hot(temperature) bowls of noodles 'cause we knew that all the germs would be killed by the boiling broth while cooked. Though, observe the glass case where merchants store their meat like duck, chicken and pork. If you see flies in there, avoid ordering it. Also, take it from me (I'm a thai) that it's best not to try papaya salad ( my husband called it 'papaya pok..pok' known as Som Tum) if you see flies hanging around the 'preparation area.' This type of dish isn't 'cooked' but 'prepared'. Some merchants will put in raw crabs with the papaya for the people who order before you, and will not wash the mortar and pestle (tools in making it). My hubby found this out the hard way.

I don't ever remember getting sick. Some of the best food you can find sometimes!! The only thing that really grossed me out was the big basin of dirty water they would wash soiled plates with. A lot of those street vendors have a reputation and following.

Yes, normally it is safe. If a place is deserted, you'd better go to a more crowded place. There are many very good street vendors in China Town.
