You need to do your research!! If your going to own any kind of animal you should always do your research first.

Go to: http://www.mypetnanny.info/pd/Rescues/AT/dogs_rescues.htm
Contact a rescue group so that they can tell you what you need to do to properly train the dog. This way your dog will not end up on death row or at rescue.

It is very important that you begin socializing your puppy at 3 months of age (not before). Introduce him/her to other dogs, children, people and your off to a good start.

No puppy should be taken away from thier mom until they are 8 weeks old!!

It is unfortunate that some people have given this breed a bad name. There are people who train these dogs to be mean and fight! Those people should never own a pitbull.

Pit bulls have a natural aggression and do need attention. Take him to obedience school and work with him every day. It's all in how you train/raise the dog. They can be great pets as long as they are trained properly and exposed to other animals, children, people at an early age. If they aren't they may become overly protective of you.
Definitely do a lot of research!

This is not the best place to get good information about the pitbull. You have people telling you these dogs are all vicious killers. Then you have people telling you these dogs are the gentlest of all breeds. The truth is probably somewhere in between. But you won't find it here. It's such an important decision. You should get breed info from real experts. Search online. Yahoo answerers can be anybody.

American Staffordshire Terriers, or Pit Bulls can also be the MOST loving & wonderful pets! It's all in how you raise them.
They are not a naturally aggressive dog. My friend has 13 of them & if a total stranger goes to her house - they are in NO danger cuz the dogs have never been trained to be aggressive.
If you train & socialize your puppy, he will be fine!
By the way - ANY dog can be aggressive. It all depends upon the owner.
Good luck!

a lot of pitbulls are really sweet, but they can get a little agressive. just as long as you train it when itsyoung, you should be fine.
you should also take it to see other dogs when its young, maybe take it to a dogpark. But make sure before its around anydog, get its parvo shots! My pitbull had parvo, and she got it from the dog park. after you get the parvo shots, keep it in the house for 2 weeks. The vet never told us that we had to keep her inside for 2 weeks, and thats why she had parvo.

it depends on how you raise your dog. as long as you raise him/her to be nice and friendly, you shouldn't have a problem. take care of him/her and make sure the dog gets exorsise and everything. those type of dogs aren't really that bad, its just, you only hear about those kind of dogs, when they do something bad.

your fears are well justified. i would no more own a pit than i would allow a undisciplined child to play with a hand grenade! they are bred to maim and kill. just read the newspaper and think how you would feel if this dog maimed or killed a child or older person! or anyone else for that matter!!!!!!
