Roundworms are extremely common in the environment. Even if a dog is routinely dewormed or on a monthly preventative, many of the worm larvae encyst, or become dormant, in the dog's organ tissues. Anthelmintics (worm-killing medications) will not affect encysted larvae.
When a female dog becomes pregnant, these larvae will emerge, cross the placenta, and thus are transmitted to the fetuses. Thus, the pups are born with worms. Some of the larvae will migrate to the mammary glands and be ingested by the pups (although this is more common in cats).
It is important to deworm puppies several times, depending on your vet's recommendations. Some will deworm the pups starting at 2 weeks of age and continuing every 2 weeks thereafter.

Actually almost all domestic animals are born with roundworms (toxacara canis) as the mothers harbour them in the muscle tissue of the body. When the mom is pregnant it lowers the immune system and the worms migrate to the pups. You will rarely find pups that do not have them, and that is why vets deworm pups no matter what.
They are transferable to humans so take care especially with children.
See a vet ASAP for treatment and good luck

Worms are like fleas; even if you regularly treat for them, your dog or cat can go out and get re-infected.
Plus the treatment only affects the parasites at certain stages of their life cycle. So some eggs will survive worming, hatch out and carry on breeding.
We worm and de-flea to control them, rather than try to get rid of them altogether; thats just about impossible!

many puppies have worms at birth because the mother dog has worms while she is pregnant. the worms will transfer to the pups while in utero. it happens with cats and kittens too.

They get them from their mother & also from nursing if the mother's teats touch the grass - they can get parasites that way.
Easy to cure - just take them to the vet for worming & they'll be just fine.
