I am looking for a fairly simple lens for my Digital Rebel XTi with a decent zoom, manual/autofocus, and f/stop. What would give be the best lens of this type with a reasonable price tag?

Great choice of a camera! I would suggest you buy it with the Canon 18 - 55mm lens to start. This will give you a zoom lens with slight wide angle to slight telephoto capabilities (in other words a good all around general purpose picture taking lens), Since you are a beginner, don't buy anything else to start. There are many other lenses available for this camera that you can buy, but since you are a beginner with the good taste to buy a fine starter camera, don't start out with too many accessory lenses. As you grow into photography, you will find out what your specific interests are, and then you can make better choices of what other lenses you want or need that will help you take the pictures you are most interested in.

I would do 2 zooms.

One for wide angle, another for long distance. Trying to combine the two doesn't achieve a good one.

Try to go with the 2 lenses if you can (clearer brighter pics)
